Before you hire a shooter to document your day you need to follow these guidelines to locate the best one.

Unlike the work of your other wedding vendors (church, party place, flowers arrangements wedding dress, cake, or even music), your photographs aren’t things you can hear, smell, see or taste at first – you don’t know really what to expect until after the fact. However, what you do know in advance is your photographer.

Step 1: Make sure your personalities mesh

Once you’ve narrowed down your list to two or three potential photographers, arrange a meeting with each in-person to see if you feel comfortable around them. Remember, you’ll spending your entire wedding day with this person and if you’re at ease, you’ll both enjoy the day and they’ll also get better shots. Win-win! Don’t underestimate the importance of liking each other!

As wedding photographers, we want our customers to feel at ease with us. First thing’s first, we are GOOD LISTENERS and UNDERSTAND what they really need from us. Likewise, we are paying enormous attention not to offend or annoy any guests, but to photoshoot them in their best light in an unobtrusive way.

Step 2: Ask for details on the Packages and Shoot Style

Before you begin asking about the packages your photographer offers, you’ll need to first decide what type of photography style you prefer. If you have in mind at least an indication of your preferences, you’ll help your photographer to propose you the appropriate package for you.

Being fans of the photo-journalistic way of shooting, we usually go for a blend of portraiture and documentary-style shots and a mix of black-and-white and color images, giving the storytelling sense in our photos and films. Our standard package includes two photographers and two cinematographers covering the entire of your Day from the preparation of groom and bride up until the party time. We are also offering albums of the best quality; the couple may choose the cover amongst limited options. Fully edited photos and cinematic films are delivered with love, tailored to the particular couple’s needs and style.

We offer also the possibility of a third shooter, since the main benefit is that he can get behind-the-scenes, photojournalistic photos, like when your guests mingling and capture the event from all angles.

Also, consider whether you’ll want to do an after-wedding shoot and what options you have. We offer after-wedding photography and cinematography sessions by drone or under-water covering as well (and some surprising extras…!).

Step 3: See a Few Full Wedding Albums and Review them with a Critical Eye

Don’t base your decision solely on what you see on Pinterest or Facebook photographer’s account. For good reason, photographers show their best pictures, all from different weddings, so you’re seeing the best of the best. The problem with that is that you won’t get a well-rounded idea of their work.

Ask the photographer to display you two or three full galleries from one wedding each time. You can get a better idea of what your complete collection of photos might look like after the wedding. In addition, ask to see at least one or two complete albums of weddings that are in a similar getting to yours. You need to pay attention to details: Are the photos properly edited? Did he get photos of both the bride and groom when they locked eyes for the first time? Did he capture people’s emotions? Are decorative details also included?

During the meeting with our clients, we showcase different styles of projects, including albums, films, and special extras. Likewise, the future newlyweds acquire a spherical idea of our work.

Step 4: Ask about your rights

The majority of the photographers own the rights to all photos taken at the wedding and they can use them promotionally (of course, for good reasons!!). We don’t find anything bad about this since the photos and films are the proofs of their work and they can only trigger a new booking.

However, we would propose you discuss in advance with your photographer your rights to the images. If you do not wish your digital proofs to be published, just inform your photographer (in some cases, it would be good for you to have a written contract in place) and shake your hands. Good friends must be bond and forthright.

Step 5: Ask about pricing and compare

When comparing fees, check whether the number of professionals is the same, albums and digital files are covered, if you get unlimited hours of coverage, drones and after-wedding photoshooting are included etc. You have to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples to get the best value.

The packages range from some hundreds to thousands of euros. The spectrum is high-end. Ask your photographer whether he has a second/third shooter or an assistant, what type of equipment he uses, who his contractors are. Have always in mind that the best professionals recruit the best team.

We have customized our packages to the special needs of our customers, In fact, we offer them their options and we build together the package that may cover their requests. For instance, we ask questions like what type of wedding photography and cinematography they prefer (i.e. photo-journalistic, documentary, candid etc.) in order to determine the number of shooters, how many albums they need, if the drone is of their interest, whether the after-wedding photoshooting will be of added-value on their style etc.

It’s usually better to pay more to the person that will make your memories last than to save costs related to photography. At least, after the wedding, all that remains is love, your mate and your photos and films.

Booking your photographer and finding your style is not a simple issue. Take your time while you have a meeting with them, ask anything you want to know, compare their work with a critical eye and follow your instinct.
